Swimming into this season’s colours

Bella 199x300 Swimming into this seasons coloursAs next season’s trends envelope candy delicious colors like yummy blues, funky purples and pretty prints, Canadian swimwear designer Katharine Demarchelier is making sure they’ll all be making a splash.

“There’s a lot of bright, playful florals,” says Demarchelier inside a cramped room at the funky Gladstone Hotel l in Toronto’s trendy Queen St. West district. There’s a rack of samples on one side and live models trying on her goodies on the other, all in the midst of an an impromtu photo shoot. “I’m inspired by the aesthetic that showing a little skin in an unexpected way can be very sexy. This comes through in the unique cut-outs in a lot of the one piece styles.”

If she’s not hitting the books as second year political science student at The University of Western Ontario, the former model is hard at work on deliciously sexy one pieces and bikinis with handmade touches like Soutache, an intricate French braiding technique. Demarchelier feels her work is unique because of additions like the elegant, yet subtle Swarovski pearls or mother pearl beads on a variety of her designs. They’re attached by a sturdy metal strap and do feel comfortable on the body.

The result is high quality swim wear for cutting edge girls who realize that it’s not about standing out at the beach—it’s about being one of a kind. Her White Label Collection for 2011 combines vibrant palettes and prints and each piece is reversible—there’s a  print on one side and coordinating color on the other.

“The reversibility sets my swim wear apart because it gives you the option of two completely different looks. I wanted to do reversible swim wear because it’s something that only a couple of other brands do,” she says.

Pieces range from $150 to $350 CDN, and for those who want a custom fit, all her offerings can be tailored to your specs. Ask about their made to order option with personalized labels.

Dressing for a Cure

frock.33 681x1024 Dressing for a Cure

frock med 16 681x1024 Dressing for a CureWhen a handful of ladies wished to raised money in support of their long-time bestie Vanessa Oliver, they turned to fashionistas for support.

Vanessa has endured the hardships of Type 1 diabetes since she was six years-old. For the past 25 years she’s injected insulin, poked her fingers, and worried about long-term complications with the disease. Her friends couldn’t stand to see her suffer, and there was nothing more they desired than to find a cure. Nevertheless, wishing for a cure is one thing, doing something about it is another.

So they conjured an event aptly named The Frocktail Party which raised $30,000 in 2009 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

And this year was no exception.

On Friday November 12, The Frocktail Party returned to Toronto’s trendy Liberty Village district to silent auction dresses from Canadian designers including David Dixon, Joeffer Caoc, outerwear extraordinaire label Mackage, Lisa Baday, Jeremy Laing and many more. They raised over $37,000 this year for JDRF, and there was no shortage of chic buyers clad in open toes and slinky outfits to snap up the frocks.

And if they weren’t checking out the wears while sipping on martinis from Svedka or varietals from fashion conscious winery Strut, they were click clocking their heels to the beauty bar, where OPI was on hand with their eye catching Swiss collection for mani redos. Tony Chaar, owner and operator of Tony Chaar Salon in the tony Yorkville district, performed quick fixes with Schwarzkopf products to make even the fabulous look that much more, fabulous.

“When my sister (Vanessa) transitioned off needle injections in favour of an insulin pump, I saw first-hand how research can improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes,” says Jessica Oliver, one of The Frocktail Party organizers. “The committee knew that our contribution to JDRF would make a difference in people’s lives. Our second annual event is just the beginning, the best is yet to come.”

Romona Keveza Stuns at LG Fashion Week

Last night we learned that if you combine Holly Golightly with Romona Keveza you get the most breathtaking evening wear and bridal gown collections we’ve ever seen. Never has a fashion show ever made us cry but between the inspiration from one of favorite movies, the music, lighting, and exquisite collection, the entire experience got us a little misty eyed.

Emotions ran high in the packed 9:00pm show, it was the first and only fashion show so far this week that garnered a standing ovation, as the audience was just as taken aback by the romantic, delicate eruption of femininity that Romona unleashed. We were taken through a mystical world of fashion that kept us wanting more. Her interpretation of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s little black dress ensnared us, her use of colorful cocktail dresses excited us, and her recreation of and elaboration on the signature one shoulder toga party dress Audrey fashioned from a bed sheet enthralled us.

Moving into the Romona Keveza Bridal Couture collection, two particular soft blue and two particular blue gowns played up the elements of the typical soft and delicate wedding dress, offset by a black wedding dress that had tears welling up in our eyes. Models strutted and flirted on the catwalk, twirling, posing, and livening up the show with every step they took. This brash showcase of femininity took Toronto’s LG Fashion Week to a whole other level for us. It was beautiful, vivacious, and awe inspiring.

Lauren Bagliore Spring Summer 2011

LaurenBagliore3 106x300 Lauren Bagliore Spring Summer 2011LaurenBagliore2 112x300 Lauren Bagliore Spring Summer 2011FIT graduate Lauren Bagliore has come into her own dark oasis this Toronto Fashion Week. The native New Yorker, Calgary transplant perfected her craft in the fashion houses of Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Libertine, and Paul Hardy. This season Lauren worked on a collection so emotional and raw she called it The Resurrection: From the Dark to Light/La Risurrezione: Dalla Scura alla Luce.

Inspired by rival to Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Lauren Bagliore created a collection rooted deep in the history of fashion for the label’s Spring Summer 2011 collection. The strong monochromatic palette presented the elements of yin and yang, creating a strong collection of pieces that incorporate frills, and delicate draping with strong angles. Strong shoulder pads on jackets mixed in with hooded turned cowl neck blouses and convertible pieces highlighted the collection’s underlying transformation theme.

The Lauren Bagliore Spring Summer 2011 collection is wholly comprised of black and white pieces with touches of gray, her use of such stark shades combined with unconventional cuts and fabrics transformed the concept of a romantic Elizabethan like collar into an edgy bold pieces.

Lauren attributes the darkness and extreme contrast in shade and shadow to her experiences of discovering beauty out of the ashes of personal tragedy. The powerful, intentional use of two tones gives the collection a purposeful, almost tormenting beauty that speaks to human emotion and the artist that Lauren is as a designer.

Sarah Stevenson Spring Summer 2011

SarahStevenson2 1024x792 Sarah Stevenson Spring Summer 2011

With gloomy skies outside Sarah Stevenson managed to pick up our day with her debut  Spring Summer 2011 collection that was anything but dreary. Sarah hosted afternoon tea amidst a presentation of the Spring Summer 2011 line. While streaming La Vie en Rose in the background we got the distinct impression that Sarah drew some inspiration from the Audrey Hepburn Classic Sabrina. Ensembles accessorized with gloves, teacups and teapots gave the show a playful air of sophistication with an added dash of childhood nostalgia for tea parties and the like.

A soft palette of greens, pinks, dove grays, and a little bit of black and white composed the color palette for the Sarah Stevenson Spring Summer 2011 collection. Fun and flirty cocktail dresses were Stevenson’s cup of tea, but our spoonful of sugar came from the delightful, well made, ultra fitted gray pant coupled with her own textile designs.

One particularly sweet cocktail dress made us think back to Valerie on Project Runway’s little folded paper napkin number. The all white piece from the Sarah Stevenson Spring Summer 2011 collection was a full corseted and skirted napkin-esque folded ensemble with tons of layers and texture that was undeniably chic. What makes this designer even more special is she’e not only a clothing designer, but a textile designer as well.
