By Samantha
MAGIC, the be-all, end-all of trade shows meet partying in the fashion world has launched a new footwear portion of their show, FN PLATFORM, which will have its second MAGIC appearance this month. We had a chance to sit down with VP Leslie Gallin to gain some insight into shoe trends she sees for the upcoming season, and to pick her brain a bit about my personal favorite accessory, footwear, of course.
POSHGLAM (PG): What do you foresee as the top footwear trends for Spring 2011?
Leslie Gallin (LG): Ankle boot/booties and chunky heels.
PG: What footwear trend never goes out of style?

PG: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
LG: I’ve lost count…
PG: What shoes are you wearing now?
LG: Michel Perry (PS We love him!)
PG: What are your go-to shoes?
LG: Good question…I just bought these fabulous Ferragamo’s which are red and white sequin flats. They remind me of Dorothy’s slippers.
PG: What is a great shoe to wear that is comfortable but looks professional?
LG: Pump sling-backs…they always look polished with a twist.
PG: What is the ideal day to night shoe?
LG: Black suede pumps.
PG: Who are your go-to shoe designers?
LG: Not fair! I view all of our exhibitors as my children and a mother loves all of her children the same. Those who deserve a shout out include Reed Evins, who is doing some amazing daytime looks, Luciano Padovan for luxury and I haven’t met a Donald Pliner shoe that didn’t fit.
PG: How is FN PLATFORM different from other footwear trade shows.

Heels Above Makes Heels Less Hazardous
By Samantha
How many times have you worn your favorite pair of heels out and about, only to find that they get stuck in the grass, or in a rut in between wooden slabs? Well, if that hasn’t happened to you, you are a lucky one. My pin thin stilettos are always getting caught, and that is definitely not the sexy look I am trying to go for when wearing them. However, for every problem, there is a solution. Heels Above has created the ultimate fix for stiletto mishaps.
Heels Above not only protects you from falling, but also keeps your heels intact, looking just as good as the day you bought them. Shoes are an investment, and Heels Above understands this, hence their creation of a product to keep them safe, and beautiful. Heels Above are little feet for your heels that prevent you from sinking or getting stuck in sticky fashion situations. They are small, and fit conveniently in your purse, so when you are on the go, you can slip them on to protect your shoes, and your reputation.
Heels Above was created by mother-daughter duo Nicole and Susie Reitman, after Nicole had beaten the path one too many times in her fave Manolos. It is one of those must-have items that we all wish we had thought of. Heels Above are recyclable and perfect for every day use, or large scale occasions. They are discreet, and will have you standing up in style, dancing around and those days of sinking in the grass or cracks will be a distant horrific memory.
Heels Above are available in clear and black, and come in two widths, designed to fit almost any pair of heels. They come with a cute pouch, making the invention all that much more adorable. One set containing two Heels Above retails for $11.99 at Heels Above.

Kate Kanzier is a Hidden Gem
By Emma
Jumping off the tube at Farringdon and wandering through streets more commonly populated with business men and the market traders and shoppers of Smithfield, you don’t feel you are in the most likely location to find a store which is one of London’s finest footwear emporiums. It is in fact located at 67-69 Leather Lane, just five minutes walk from the station. The sole Kate Kanzier store has a blacked out shop window creating an allure of mystery and a desperation to know the secrets stashed inside. The shop was buzzing full of women in contrast to the comparatively quiet streets of Farringdon at the weekend. There is a kind of ‘in the know’ feel among those perusing the beautiful footwear and this makes the brand even more special.
The shopping experience is different to any other. The label focuses on providing affordable luxury and it takes this idea right through it’s collection and store environment. The area is set out more like an art gallery, with each piece of footwear elegantly displayed against the bare black walls or propelled into vision on jet podiums. The till is located in a little cubby hole in the corner of the room and the stylish assistants disappear from view to fetch your chosen wares. This is a different way to buy shoes, but it’s a good one.
The mix of footwear is extraordinary. From budget quirky ballerinas adorned with feathers, diamante skulls or stripes to quality gladiator sandals in an array of colours. There are heels and flats galore! Most of the collection is made from leather and is of a high quality. The designs look and feel much more expensive than their meagre price tag. One of Kanzier’s specialities seems to be brogues. They come in every shape, size and colour. Perfect to team with cute ankle socks for this seasons London look.
For those who don’t live in London everything is available on Kate Kanzier’s website. Shipping is worldwide so international fans need not be disappointed. Don’t miss out, this is affordable luxury for everyone.

Modern Vintage Has Footwear All Figured Out
By Samantha
Modern Vintage is the footwear line that has exploded over the fashion scene since its launch in Europe in 2003. Modern Vintage footwear fuses fashion forward styling with comfort in creating shoes that are truly re-inventing the market. The fit is supreme, the craftsmanship is excellent and the style is on point. The innovative collection always remains ahead of the trends and is created from exclusive quilted leathers, special ornaments, embossed leather soles and funky hardware.
Modern Vintage is one of the first fashion footwear lines to truly understand the importance of comfort. They insert silicone into the footbeds of the shoes to ensure the premium in comfort. That, coupled with rich vintage leathers, and an array of colors and silhouettes has made the line a go to amongst celebs including Nicole Richie, Selena Gomez, Jessica Lowndes, Whitney Port, Hilary Duff and Michelle Trachtenberg, to name a few. This silicone technology is revolutionary to the footwear world, and is just another reason why the line has become such a must-have, as the shoes truly feel like you are walking on air. Wearing heels hurts, let’s face it, but Modern Vintage makes the experience not only sexy and fun, but comfortable.
For Fall 2010, Modern Vintage is expanding its footwear line, and will be debuting a line of handbags and leather jackets. Keeping with their philosophy of amazing quality at an incredibly price point, the lines are sure to be incredible. They will be well-made, fashion forward and classic in design. I cannot wait to see the jackets, which are set to include a motorcycle and bomber style, which I adore. And seriously, the handbag lover in me is craving the bags as well. But for now, I am still obsessing over the shoes. The styles are fun and fresh, the silhouettes are timeless and Modern Vintage is just simply a must-have, lust-have for every girl. I love the sandals for summer, which are breezy and add a vibrant touch to any outfit. The little booties are seriously my fave. I want to wear them with all of my summertime dresses. Modern Vintage is full of flavor that doesn’t kill your wallet. Fashion forward comfort has never been this easy, seriously.
Modern Vintage retails for $198 to $275 at Modern Vintage.

Suecomma bonnie, Fall’s “Rebellious Love”
By Samantha
It’s really crazy how the smallest things can become inspirations for full lines that are absolutely extraordinary. Such is the case with wild flowers in the middle of the road, the inspiration behind Suecomma bonnie’s Fall/Winter collection, which seeks to present the ordinary as high fashion footwear. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the line, here is a brief intro. The name was created by combining “sue” and “bonnie”. “Sue” comes from the phonetic sound of “shoe” and “Bonnie” is the English nickname of Bo-hyun Lee, the CEO and designer of the line. The Korean designer’s footwear has become a favorite amongst celebrities, stylists and editors.
Lee was always interested in art and design, and throughout the years, has learned to embody her inherent fashion sense, creating her own personal world of fashion. She started her foray in fashion as a menswear designer, who just happened to love shoes. Her love of shoes eventually led her to leave menswear and become a shoe salesperson, when a friend in Spain asked her to try and sell her wares. She sold and sold and sold, and found herself in the industry she loved so much. Being in sales, she learned every aspect of the shoe design world, and finally, she took the leap to begin designing shoes. What I love most about her creations is that the shoes that she designs are shoes that she would really wear. She takes risks in her designs, and even if no one buys them (fat chance, they are amazing), she presents her ideas of footwear to the world in her own way.
For Lee, the philosophy has always been making shoes that she would want to wear. As a designer just starting out, this isn’t always easy, especially when you have a creative mind. In 2003, when she first opened her shop, she was terrified, as muted colors were in, and her shoes were anything but basic. But, her hard work definitely was worth it, and every risk was worth every reward, as her shoes received attention within days of her store being opened. People put their names on waiting lists like crazy to be able to have one of the absolutely stunning handmade shoes.
The shoes are expertly made by technical experts in Korea, and materials are sourced from Europe. Suecomma bonnie filled a gap in the Korean market for women that wanted luxury shoes without the crazy price tags, for women that wanted to feel glamorous and stylish. Lee still expertly designs her shoes, which are now sold in many countries. She sits and wonders what will be worn with each shoe, and how it will be worn, and each of these factors goes into the design process. This Korean shoe designer is a force to be reckoned with, as her shoes take a front row seat of edge and elegance redefined. This season’s shoes are rebellious in design, and will have you instantly falling in love.
Suecomma bonnie is available in the US at Satine.

POSHGLAM Chats With Shoe God, Alexandre Birman
By Samantha
There are so many shoe designers out there that have fashion houses that have been around since long before I was born, therefore, I take serious pleasure in watching a shoe designer of my decade come into the marketplace and flourish. Such is the case with Alexandre Birman, the Brazilian born shoe god. When I first came across his shoes, I was awe-stricken for their unique silhouettes, fantastic attention to detail and absolutely stunning design. Since then, with each collection, I have just continued to adore the designer’s creations more and more. And I am not alone; Kate Hudson, Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen are just some of his mega-starlet fans.
Birman first launched his luxury footwear brand in 2000, which made perfect sense as he was surrounded by fashion since he was a young boy. His father owns Arezzo, and is one of Brazil’s largest shoe manufacturers. Brazil is definitely an up-and-comer in the footwear scene, creating shoes that rival those from Italy easily. In 2008, he launched a second collection, appropriately titled, Alexandre Birman. The line focused in on luxury and sophistication and is created using imported raw materials, which he uses to create wearable works of art. The designs are a beautiful marriage of classic simplicity and decadent edge, and each shoe can be worn from day to night, creating an outfit and making a statement.
The footwear line spread like wildfire through Brazil and it was imminent (and lucky for me) that he line branched out to the US. Birman truly understands the woman’s foot and uses intricate, fun techniques to highlight new stunning areas of the woman’s foot and of course recognizes the old favorites. The shoes are well-made and beyond comfortable, literally you can walk miles in them without flinching once, it’s crazy. Right now, he is sticking with shoes, and I’m a shoe-freak, so it’s all good, but I’m not going to lie. When he introduces bags and other accessories, I will be the first on line.
POSHGLAM was able to nail down the Brazilian shoe god for a quick chat to hear more about his line, his design process and just about him in general. All hail to Alexandre Birman, emerging shoe (designer) god.
POSHGLAM (PG): When did you start designing footwear?
Alexandre Birman (AB): I launched my first luxury level brand, Alexandre Birman about 3 years ago. Although I come from a family of shoemakers in Brazil, the family shoemaking business has been around for decades.
PG: What women’s footwear trend do you love? Not prefer?
AB: The trend I’m really into at this moment is the peep toe bootie, I have many of these silhouettes in my collection and they are a favorite.
PG: What shoe should every woman have in her closet?
AB: Every woman should have a killer python-skin high heel in her closet.

PG: Who or what inspires you most?
AB: I’m inspired by different cultures, time periods, colors, emotions, etc.
PG: How do you want your shoes to make women feel?
AB: Luxurious, sophisticated and sexy at the same time.
PG: What inspired your Fall 2010 collection?
AB: My fall 2010 collection is very military and utilitarian-inspired. Some styles are structured similarly to the way a soldier’s boot would be, while other styles have wooden heels and aggressive platforms.

PG: Can a woman ever have too many shoes?
AB: I would say definitely not, however today it is not about how many pairs of shoes one owns; it’s about choosing the right piece to make you stand out. Which is what I try to remember when I design my shoes.
PG: Any plans to expand your line beyond footwear?
AB: At this moment in time I am 100% focused on footwear, but you never know what the future holds!
PG: Can you describe the woman that wears Alexandre Birman? (ie: What does she like? How does she spend her weekends?)
AB: She is a consumer that likes to have a shoe that will make her stand out in a crowd. She is sexy and confident.

PG: Where are your shoes made?
AB: They are handmade in our Brazil factory. Most of the materials are imported from Italy, and the exotic skins are brought in from different regions of the Philippines. Our shoemakers are masters at their craft; they all have the finest of trainings in Italy.
PG: As a relatively new shoe designer, how has it felt to have some the hottest women in Hollywood wearing your shoes?
AB: It’s a dream come true. I could not ask for anything more. The last year has been indescribable and I would like to thank my hardworking team for making it all possible.
PG: A word to POSHGLAM readers…what else would you like them to know about you and/or Alexandre Birman shoes that they do not know?
AB: Alexandre Birman is available at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Follow up on twitter @Alexandrebirman.

Johnston & Murphy for the Ladies
By Samantha
The name Johnston & Murphy over the years has become synonymous with high end men’s footwear. In fact, if you look if your father or grandfather’s closet, you may even find a pair of the classic loafers. Johnston & Murphy has transitioned their classic look to now cater to the women’s market as well.
Johnston & Murphy has been around since 1850, so this endeavor is a long time coming, but from the look of the shoes, was totally worth the wait. The shoes have a menswear inspired look, but manage to remain ultimately feminine and super sleek. While they have become a cult favorite for men, there is no doubt that women will be wearing their Johnston & Murphy’s into the boardroom soon, and out on the town after.
The launch of Johnston & Murphy into women’s footwear, leather goods and accessories proves that even in a man’s world, a woman knows how to work her style straight into his world, even coming out on top. The Johnston & Murphy woman is confident and cool, comfortable in her own skin and ahead of the style curve. From her meeting with leading executives to her child’s school play to a charity outing, this woman is always working, but manages to always look entirely put together. Of the Johnston & Murphy women’s collection, I am partial to the shoes. They are made with top quality materials and while they are classic in style, they are made vibrant by the little details that set them apart. Also, these shoes are comfortable, so walking from the boardroom to a lunch meeting never got easier.
For more information, visit Johnston & Murphy, and shop away. There are heels and sandals and flats to boot, what shoes will you pick out for the taking?
Pictured (from top to bottom): Cassidy Snake Sandal, $198; Emily Platform Pump, $198; Anna Drive, $138; Leah Woven Gladiator Sandal, $148.

New York style, by Heather Williams
By Sophie
Add some sexy flair to your footwear this year with designer Heather Williams‘ Spring 2010 collection. Drawing inspiration from a New Yorker’s life, Williams based her lasted designs off of popular landmarks in the Big Apple.
Splitting her time between New York and Milan, Williams embraces her surroundings fully. With her Spring collection, the designs are New York-inspired but are made with Italian leathers.
“I’ve been living a ‘double life’ in Milan and New York,” Williams said. “…And I’m always inspired by the environments that I live in… Translated to footwear, the new designs let the foot take center stage for a strong and sexy style.”
The architecturally savvy shoes are structured and edgy. The “Gaia” shoe ($740) wraps the foot in sexy straps, while the blue-black “Jesse” shoe ($970) gives a tough leather-bound and snakeskin look.
Also great is the “Summit” ($715), which has a softer look and is perfect to pair with a khaki or jeans and a blazer.
