Erdem Takes Us Into Spring with the Russian Ballet

Erdem spring 2011 Erdem Takes Us Into Spring with the Russian Ballet

While Fall’s 2011 Fashion Week only wrapped up last week, as the spring season nears, it all seem miles away. And nothing signals the beginning of spring like the appearance of a lighter wardrobe-well at least that’s how it plays out in the fashion world. With his Spring 2011 Collection, Erdem Moralioglu transports us into a warmer climate with ballet-inspired dresses, harlequin patterns, and gorgeous poppy prints.

Moralioglu who gathered his muse from the Ballets Russes’ costume archive, explained, “The shapes were all about the ballet.” Fitted bodices and stiff A-line skirts done in red or white lace showed off the structure and flou of a ballet costume, while stunning Nicholas Kirkwood shoes of the same print tied up the calf like ballet slippers.

Pirouettes aside, Erdem’s delicate details that have garnered him an ever-growing global fan base including celebrities Michelle Williams, Leighton Meester, Lea Michele, Keira Knightly, Kate Bosworth, and Vogue’s very own, Anna Wintour-(several of the names mentioned above have already been spotted wearing some of Erdem’s Spring 2011 creations)-,are in their purest form for his Spring 2011 collection. Lace appliquéd with more white lace, Swarovski crystals scattered across the diamond shaped patterned bodices, as well as the designer’s signature over embroidery, showed off Erdem’s mesmerizing craftsmanship and artistic vision. Keeping up with the season’s trend, Erdem also presented a subtle assortment of gauzy floor-length gowns that showed off just the right amount of sex appeal through thigh high slits and sensual floating trains-perfect for the red-carpet.

Light floral prints along with a color palette that mainly triggered whites, yellows, and greens (with the exception of a couple of bold red flowers that were super-pigmented and vivid), set a lighter tone for the Spring season.

The who’s who of fashion press in London were invited to the Ritz this morning by First Lady Samantha Cameron and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The hotel has a special connection to fashion because it was the site of Alexander McQueen’s first post-graduate show and today served as the site for a preview of the newest exhibit of his work, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. The exhibition will debut at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, which will be launched as it is every year at this year’s Met Ball on May 2nd.

scameron 202x300 First Look: Alexander McQueens Savage Beauty Exhibit for the the Metropolitan Museums Costume Institute“When I heard from Anna Wintour that the Costume Institute’s major annual exhibition would explore the artistry of Alexander McQueen, I was thrilled by this recognition of British fashion, said Cameron.

The curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton talked about putting together the exhibition and the help he received from McQueen’s closest colleagues and friends: “We drew on the McQueen archive in London and are indebted to McQueen’s so-workers and colleagues for their willingness to share their memories of him. Especially Stella McCartney, whose friendship with McQueen makes her an ideal co-chair for the Costume Institute Ball, and Sarah Burton, who gave a valuable insight in to McQueen’s design process over the past 14 years.”

On fashion, Cameron sported a tuxedo jacket from the McQ by McQueen collection, a leather skirt from Whistles and pumps from LK Bennett. Wintour went for her signature loud prints in a layered look of a leopard print trenchcoat, grey sweaterdress and brown suede knee-high boots, while McCartney stuck to her signature black.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty will run from May 4th 2011 to July 31st 2011 and is a must-see exhibition. Pieces from all his collections will be featured. Looking at the designs is a somber reminder of just how talented he was and how greatly his work transcends fashion and leaps straight into the art realm. The pieces are breathtaking and anyone who loves fashion will find seeing them up and close and personal to be a real treat.

Christopher Kane Fall 2011 Takes Us Back to School with Pencil Cases and Geometry

christopher kane finale Christopher Kane Fall 2011 Takes Us Back to School with Pencil Cases and Geometry

As a recent winner of the 2011 BFC/Vogue Fashion Award, Christopher Kane showcased his most minimalist collection to date for his Fall 2011 Ready-To-Wear line. Beginning with geometric patterned crochet pencil skirts and fitted sweaters, all done in muddy greens and browns, turquoises and grays, Kane showed off a penchant for sharply tailored separates and sophisticated attire. Kane smartly paired off his knits with leather printed jackets, skirts and pants, thereby creating a sexy combination of wearable pieces. Shortly after, he surprised us by adding strips of liquid plastic on the edges of backless dresses, hems of skirts, and pockets.

Backstage, Kane had forwarned his guest that  “This will be known as the ‘liquid collection’. It was inspired by the pencil cases I had at school and lollipops. But we didn’t want it to be over elaborate-we wanted it to be about really wearable, sophisticated clothes.”

Never one to exaggerate, Kane kept his promise, as liquid took over in the form of green and blue or red and pink.  Creating futuristic accents on intricate necklines, peter pan collars, and even taking a main role on a couple of frocks, the lava looking liquid showed off a progressive style that is reflective of Kane’s evolution as a designer. Always looking to showcase new ideas and push fashion boundaries, Kane managed to keep his looks from going into busy-mode by using a black crepe fabric and clean shapes. I particularly like how he combined fun through the use of a gelly-filled plastic with sexier accents such as black netting and midriff baring frocks with missing panels.

And just when I thought Kane’s liquid collection stopped at accents, a whole slew of iridescent sequins took over. And while there was enough sparkle to make Lady Gaga proud, the shimmering seperates were streamlined and done in simple sihouettes.

As for garnering celebrity attention, Christopher Kane proved he’s still got it as his show filled up with the likes of  Samantha Cameron, Anna Wintour, Alexa Chung, Daphne Guinness, Daisy Lowe, Jo Wood, Natalie Massenet, Glenda Bailey, Derek Blasberg, Franca Sozzani and Emmanuelle Alt.
