The new Spring/Summer 2013 Marni collection has us swooning over its pure beauty and gorgeous textures. Described as “a weightless exploration of volume,” the Marni 2013 designs are light and airy, A-line, carefree with clean silhouettes and sculpted lines. The look that grabbed our attention immediately was the way Marni mixed and matched checks: black and white with color – it felt like an optical illusion walking the runway.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll be wearing this spring:

The basics: Straight and round are juxtaposed just as the front and the back are: a square top is paired with a flared skirt; what looks like a sleeveless coat turns sideways into a blouson. Short-sleeved shirts and matching pants are as efficient as uniforms; basques bring focus on the hips; flowery patterns are feisty.

The palette: Prints highlight and gently distort the neatness of the design. Checks and sequences of sliced dots have a hypnotic rhythm. Block flowers and simultaneous motifs entertain the eye. The color palette is essential, with delicate accents and deep peaks: white, black, dark green, touches of aqua, pale grey, orange, red, purple.

The texture: Dresses look like fabric was folded, rather than cut, into the final shape; pleats and peplums create sensuous additions on tops and skirts. Firm, compact fabrics enhance the bare pureness of the designs using cotton canvas, tape jacquard and bonded leather.

The finale: Accessories have a modernist feel. Pointed open-toe slingbacks with a metal wedge and wooden platform flats resemble sinuous architectures. Bags are precise and boxy styles with padlocks, rectangular models in geometric weaves of leather and PVC, oversized purses.

The beauty book: As spring and summer tend to be about “barely there” makeup, Marni did not disappoint. We saw a lot of minimal, natural-toned makeup, hair parted on the side and swept into a low, messy bun.
