After months of chatting it up with Carla Fernandes, she’s become a virtual sister and friend residing in Africa. Born in Maputo, Mozambique – raised in Johannesburg, and after working at Jimmy Choo, South Africa, she began to gain exposure to luxury brands such as GANT and PRADA, as they were all under the South African holdings company AVI LTD. Carla also kept an online journal as a hobby (like most of us) and fell in love with online interaction and editorial.

After immersing herself in the culture of luxury and pondering Africa’s rich history she felt the need for a different kind of challenge. Her family still lived back in Mozambique so she decided to seek an opportunity there. Mozambique, of course came with the benefits of learning so much more about her roots. She indeed got way more than she bargained for–leaving South Africa entirely was probably the biggest challenge yet. So, she decided to prioritize education once again, and considers it her greatest investment to date. She is currently doing a BA in International Relations and Diplomacy and studying correspondingly through the University of South Africa (UNISA). She chose this degree due to her huge sense of leadership and passion for Africa, a better Africa, the evolving Africa. She hopes to someday be able to work with various foundations and organizations globally to help the fight against the devastating negatives that come with poverty in Africa. It’s the more serious and intellectual side of fashionable woman I know.

Her unquenchable thirst for helping her mother country fused with her love and passion for fashion surmises her daily life. When she left Cape Town, she felt as if she left everything behind…the thrill, the rush, the glitz, she missed it, I missed it all. Fashion, marketing, media and PR, all this left pending question marks…since she could not find a place or a platform to quench her thirst for more luxury, fashion and glamour in Mozambique, she decided to create one.

“After an online meet with POSHGLAM.com’s Kimberly E. Stone , I was most inspired to get on this venture. Started off as nothing serious until I realized the sort of impact it can potentially have in the Mozambican market and maybe even the African Market. This could ideally turn into my first business venture – so I thought.”

She is now a Young African Entrepreneur, Founder of Africa–Vogue.com – with this platform she hopes to fuse her two worlds. Whit that being her goal and to create an emphasis of the importance in Social responsibility and philanthropy along with her undying passion for fashion, lifestyle and Media PR. She strongly believes that if “We as Africans don’t create our own mediums to portray what is ours and tell our very own stories, someone else will…and probably not the right way.”

Carla hopes to aspire to inspire young female entrepreneurs, whether they are in the corporate field or in the fashion industry…

46664 Fashion: The long “Catwalk” to freedom

Carla Fernandes 596x632 46664 Fashion: The long “Catwalk” to freedom

Here’s a little history recap before I proceed: 46664 (it’s pronounced as four, double six, six four) was also the prison number for Nelson Mandela from his imprisonment in 1964 to his release in 1990. The number stems from the fact that he was the 466 prisoner of 1964. 46664 is also the name of the HIV/AIDS awareness campaign started by Nelson Mandela, which has held a series of charity concerts; commonly known as “46664 Concerts”.

If that was not enough, these campaigns have now landed in the world of trends. Now we can all own a piece of history, or at the least promote the knowledge of it. Majority of the collection comprises of prints – no brainer that it was inspired by the full print / loose shirts that Mandela himself wore after taking office in 1994 as South Africa’s first black president.

Mandela’s 46664 fashion line made catwalk debut in JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – Sep 26 2011.

The collection so far, has lines for men, women and children too. From printed dresses to conservative pencil skirts, printed wear for men or even “46664” branded golf shirts for kids. This is not only for the love of fashion, but primarily for the love of charity.

Discover the collection online: www.46664fashion.com – (images courtesy of the site).

“46664 Fashion was created as a partnership between Seardel/Brand ID and 46664, as part of 46664′s concerted move towards building its sustainability/self-sufficiency.

The license agreement was robustly overseen by the 46664 Board and ensures that a percentage of 46664 Fashion’s turnover is given to 46664 to further the humanitarian legacy of its founder, Mr Nelson Mandela. This means that 46664 will be able to engage in long-term planning. Its Board will identify projects that will benefit from funds raised through sales of 46664 Fashion, and the other commercial endeavours undertaken by 46664. It’s important to note that monies raised by 46664 will not accrue to any individual.”

South Africa is definitely at the forefront of African Fashion therefore we can look forward to exuberant collections as well as concerts from the “46664” brand.

Nelson Mandela Fashion Line to Makeover your Style and Heart

To some, seasonal wardrobe makeovers are necessary, essential to their fashion persona, and a reality. Rarely though-do these material changes affect in a non-aesthetic manner-the feel good type of makeover that is. Until now.

According to the AP, The Nelson Mandela Foundation has just announced that it will be launching an international clothing line to sustain the foundation’s charities while simultaneously help South Africa’s troubled textile clothing industry.

The line will debut in South Africa in August and is set to be titled “46664”, after Mandela’s prisoner number at the infamous Robben Island Prison, where he spent 27 years locked up before becoming Southing Africa’s first black President in 1994. The line is set to include bright sportswear for men (see image below) and intricately patterned African-influenced women’s wear. 46664 Apparel will also include couture garments and will eventually include pieces created by international and national guest designers.

Although the line has not yet been released, there is already controversy headed its way, as it has been critiqued for being too expensive. According to the AP, a T-shirt will cost about 180 rand ($26) while a man’s collard shirt will run for about 600 rand ($86), which is exceedingly pricey in a country where the minimum wage is less than $200. But as with all fashion, the term “expensive” is relative and must be put into a context where proceeds will help those that are less unfortunate as well as the country’s economy.

Foundation board member, Achmat Dangor said “You are not just investing in a piece of apparel … you also are investing in a plan that will continue to spread that humanitarian legacy of Mandela.”

46664 Apparel joins a small but dedicated club of socially conscious clothing labels, such as Edun, a line founded by Bono and his wife in an effort to bring a steady, sustainable manufacturing industry to Africa. The clothing line will be sold at its own store, to be opened August in downtown Johannesburg, as well as in department store. It also will be available online, for international sale.
