Estee Lauder adding Joan Smalls to its beautiful roster in December helped end 2010 on a hopeful note for the beauty and fashion industry. It’s no secret that diversity has long been a challenge on the runways and within magazine pages. Although make-up campaigns became increasingly more diverse in the last decade, celebrity faces like Halle Berry and Beyonce dominated for black women. Black models, including Jessica White for Maybelline, were not nearly as prominent. On the other side of the counter, Caucasian models were not overwhelmingly outnumbered by celebrities.

The true exception, when it comes to prominently featuring models of color in a context in which the mainstream industry actually pays attention, has been Iman Cosmetics. In 1994, she launched Iman Cosmetics precisely because she spent so many years of her top model days mixing foundations to match her rich complexion. She has since featured a bevy of ethnic beauties that are still pleasantly arresting in the make-up aisles. I was quite excited to see the gorgeous face of my friend, model Nichole (Robinson) Galicia, in the early campaigns. Of course Fashion Fair, Flori Roberts and Posner, among others, were always ahead of the game but Iman’s impact was greater because she was an honorary member of the industry elite. For her to make such a statement turned heads and made headlines.

But, to its credit, Estee Lauder has long stood out from its mainstream peers precisely because it has always favored models over celebrities. And, in regards to its spokesmodels of color, Joan Smalls was very much preceded by Liya Kebede. Even still, the Joan Smalls addition is wonderful news, especially on the heels of Estee Lauder signing its first Asian model Liu Wen. The face of beauty has long been multicultural but the mainstream fashion and beauty industry just began waking up to this in the 21st century in a major way and they are still moving at a snail’s pace for too many.

This struck me quite strongly when I visited Dakar, Senegal over the holidays to attend the Africa Fashion Awards. Although cultivating the fashion industry on the Continent, particularly in regards to designers, was very much the topic, I could not help but notice the beautiful Senegalese women who represented all that the industry says they want everywhere I went.  Tall and thin is the norm in Senegal for both women and men. Needless to say, flawless skin is also common.

Yes I know it takes more than height, proper weight and flawless skin to make a model. Personality is also a huge factor. Aerin Lauder, senior vice president and creative director of Estee Lauder, told Vogue.com “When we pick someone to represent the brand, it’s about her personality, too. It’s not just the face.”

But personality is very tricky because it’s very subjective as well. Like beauty, personality can also be in the eye of the beholder. Suppose someone makes a culturally insensitive statement or gesture and a model points it out, does she become less personable?  Is she now difficult to work with?

Sometimes we really don’t know. This industry is so not an exact science but one thing is certain: diversifying the faces of beauty that we see will help bridge the gaps. The more we see reflections of the world and not just one idea of beauty, the more comfortable we all become with the world of hues that’s our reality.

As we nestle into 2011, the fall shows are just around the corner.  Of course we never know if the message is getting across until we see the runways and the pages of our favorite magazines. In 2009, French Vogue disappointed greatly with its blackface spread with Dutch model Lara Stone and, last year, blackface photos of Claudia Schiffer shot by Karl Lagerfeld surfaced. And, of course, the runways were not nearly diverse enough. Hopefully 2011 will not unleash similar disappointments.

I know that I am not the only one ready to celebrate the beauty of all women and not just a European standard of beauty that hasn’t quite mastered its disappearing act. It’s a new year and we have plenty of reason to believe that, in 2011, we will continue to see the beauty and fashion industry move even closer to embracing us all.

Editorial Advert: POSH & Functional, Tips for Post-War Metro Wardrobe w/Space

lille tesco Editorial Advert: POSH & Functional, Tips for Post War Metro Wardrobe w/Space For most of us, closet space is always limited, especially in post-war NYC and beyond. When spring comes around and its time to throw out the old and bring in the new, it can be very hard to decide which clothing pieces should make a trip to the dumpster and which should maintain their privileged position on the hanger.

As some are constantly moving, often times from country to country, learning what items to keep and what to chuck is essential to remaining trendy without wasting space or money. In general, functional yet spacious wardrobes save us space and the best way to gain function and space is to organize your wardrobe in a way that suits your style and daily clothing needs.

There are a few things to keep in mind when beginning the process of cleaning out your wardrobe. These three tips will help you on your way to a simpler and space saving wardrobe that is in style and on budget.

1. Is that dress Stella McCartney?

Not all jackets, dresses and shoes are made equal. In most cases, the more money you spend the better quality you get and quality means longevity. Keeping designer items is a good idea for three reasons.

Firstly, these items are often classically styled, especially if in colors such as black, dark brown, camel, and navy blue. The brand oftentimes is not as important as the item itself. Clean, simple lines and patterns ensure that the item will keep you looking trendy into the future.

Secondly, fashion is cyclical. The quality of these items will see them last until they come into fashion again, usually with the added chic of vintage flare.

Thirdly, these are beautifully made items you spent your hard earned money on and they mark an important moment in your fashion evolution so give them the due they deserve.

2. Have you worn that shirt in the last 6 months?

If you don’t wear an item in your wardrobe then don’t keep it, especially if it isn’t designer. Retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and Topshop often sell very trendy items that play on a very specific style of the moment. These items last for a season or two but, when finished, should be replaced with the next big thing.

3. Who are you dressing up for?

Clothes for work, weekends and going out on the town all take up space. Its important to think about how much time you spend doing different activities. Our lives change and we stop doing activities that we once did regularly leaving a pile of unused clothes in our wardrobe. If you have a lot of evening clothes but don’t go out or dress up, then its time to make space by relieving those party dresses of their hangers.

Keep in mind that functional yet spacious wardrobes save us space by eliminating the clutter of unused and undeserving items. So now to the spring cleaning!

Sean John Gives Back & Spoils Starlets at Sundace

Sundance and Sean John Sean John Gives Back & Spoils Starlets at Sundace

Once a year, the snowy town of Park City, Utah becomes the mecca for celebrities and movie industry insiders. Skiing the slopes and watching the newest movies by day, partying at the hottest spots at night—the Sundance Film Festival is where it’s at for wintertime Hollywood fun. And while movies and parties are fun, you know the celebrities are probably most excited for all the free swag they get. The Talent Resources Suite at the Sundance Film Festival is where the stars go to try out new gadgets, taste delicious gourmet food, and try on clothes. And the best part is, they get to keep all of it.

The exclusive apparel sponsor at the Talent Resources Suites for this year’s Sundance Film Festival is none other than Sean John, the clothing company owned by mogul Sean “P Diddy” Combs. Stars like AnnaLyne McCord, Paris Hilton, and Karina Smirnoff stopped by the TR Suites to pick up their free Sean John outerwear. But Sean John isn’t just giving coats away to rich people who can afford them—for every coat given away at the Sundance Film Festival, Sean John is donating a brand new coat to an at-risk New Yorker as part of the New York Cares Coat Drive (SMILE).

The coat drive, which benefits New Yorkers in need, has to date given out 61,790 coats to New Yorkers. Although individuals can no longer donate coats (the coat drive ended December 31st), the New York Cares website encourages financial donations. While most companies are just giving away their goods at events like the Sundance Film Festival in the name of great publicity (who doesn’t want stars to be wearing around their clothes or using their gadgets), it’s refreshing to see a company who has figured out a way to benefit those in need through giving away their products.

Once Again — Kerry Washington wears Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, and Vince Camuto in Berlin

Kerry Washington Django Once Again Kerry Washington wears Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, and Vince Camuto in Berlin

Kerry Washington, just stop. Everything this starlet wears is to die for, and she needs to hand it over ASAP. The Berlin premiere of her new movie, “Django Unchained,” proved to be no different. Washington looked cuter than ever, wearing a calf-length ivory checked Louis Vuitton Spring 2013 shift dress, white Christian Louboutin pumps, a VC Signature ring clasp snake clutch, and a white Louis Vuitton bow in her hair. Come on, bows haven’t looked this cute since Gossip Girl ended, and they’ve definitely never looked this chic. Uh-mazing.

When I first saw this dress on the runway, I was less than blown away. Under the lights of the Louvre, the color could be described at best as a faded yellow, the hemline as too long, and the overall shape as, well, shapeless. It seemed like one of those pieces that, despite its simplicity, couldn’t really translate from runway to real life, especially given the quintessentially 60s vibe it was giving off. Seeing it on Washington, however, has completely changed my mind. I wouldn’t even believe it was the same dress if I didn’t know it was. But leave it up to Washington, a rising star in the realm of style, to prove me wrong.

Since promotion for “Django Unchained” began, Washington slew of amazing outfits has been blowing us away. From her cutout Peter Pilotto number in Rome to the Rochas gown she wore in Paris, she’s been killing it.  Everything seems to look perfect on her petite frame, which explains why she can make the aforementioned shapeless Louis Vuitton piece look so good. One things for sure, she’s definitely my new girl crush, and I want to be her best friend. Maybe then we can trade clothes? And by trade, I mean I’m just going to take all of hers.
