For his Fall 2011 Ready-To-Wear Collection, Giambattista Valli transformed the girl into a lady by decking her out in classic shifts, glamorous cocktail dresses, and impressive tulle ball gowns.  The progression took place slowly as the collection began with minimalism-tweed shifts, sheared fur, black and gray combos. Soon enough, streaks of neon yellow began appearing on the bottom of shift dresses, giving that cream, black, and gray just the right amount of POP. Black and white continued to dominate in solids, floral motifs, and bits of tulle and sequins. However, it did its most impressive work on big furry-coats that showed off the Dalmation trend, which had been spotted all over London and New York during their respective Fashion Weeks.

Color did, however, have its moment in brilliant golds, magentas, pinks and reds, as well as in accented floral satin coats. Of note, a tomato red ruffled cocktail dress, which showed off Giambattista’s mastery in creating lady-like silhouettes that are nothing short of dramatic. While short hemlines kept Giambattista’s lady from looking too much like a dame, she never looked improper. In fact, classic shapes that enhanced the female form elegantly were refreshingly chic, modern, and reminiscent of legendary style-setters, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Jackie O.

After his show Valli explained his classic silhouettes, stating, “He wants everything to be immediate. I want to arrive three minutes before a woman is thinking about getting dressed. And while Giambattista’s finale dresses-simple tank tops paired with full tulle ball gown skirts-were nothing short of glamorous, the lack of froufrou, embroidery and sparkle introduced a whole new way to go about evening wear-one in which the female is comfortable showing off a powerful ensemble that doesn’t scream too much. How very Michelle Obama of Valli.
