The best part about award shows has to be the red carpet, and someone the red carpet seems to love is Eva Longoria. On January 10th at the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards in Los Angeles, Longoria donned a Monique Lhuillier gown paired with a Ferragamo minaudière. She completed the look with minimal jewelry (just diamond post earrings), a smoky eye, and slicked back hair.
Longoria is someone who usually blows us away with her red carpet style. From va-va-voom Marchesa and sleek and sexy Zac Posen to effortlessly chic Reem Acra, I’m always looking forward to seeing what this lady is going to walk to carpet in. But this dress, sadly, was a miss. In fact, the only thing I really liked about this ensemble was the Ferragamo minaudière. The fuchsia gown had a great, figure-hugging shape, but the ruffle detailing that crisscrosses the bodice just doesn’t do anything to complement a woman’s shape. Longoria, a petite 5’2”, has a great shape, but this gown didn’t do anything for that. The high neckline was matronly and the fabric looked cheap. The saving grace of the dress was the open back, an unexpectedly beautiful and elegant detail given what the front of the dress looks like. Also, the open back served as an explanation for the slicked back do that’s reminiscent of the gym. I get that she wanted to show off the open back, but there’s much more elegant ways of wearing your hair up, Eva.
The Ferragamo minaudière, however, is amazing. In case you’ve been living under a rock, minaudières, which are basically very sturdy, small, rectangular-shaped clutches, are the new it bag. And this Ferragamo one is to die for. Constructed of embroidered velvet, its intricate pattern reminds me of old world Russia.
In the future, Longoria should stick to her signature strapless, mermaid gowns when it comes to the red carpet, but she should definitely keep it coming with the awesome handbags.
