Industry Insider: Lavette Slater | To Wig or Not to Wig

Lavette Slater Headshot 631x632 Industry Insider: Lavette Slater | To Wig or Not to Wig

Wigs have become the “go-to” style, they are not just for celebrities. The everyday woman; working, homemakers, and even students, they have become the universal look for anyone who needs to escape that “bad hair day” or a unique transformation for some excitement.  There are many reasons why people choose to wear wigs. Some like the versatility of changing their look from day to day, others have careers that require everyday styling that would otherwise damage their own hair and many have other issues like thinning hair or alopecia. Whatever the reason for wearing a wig, everyone should know the “ins and outs” of wearing them.

To start, there are many types of wigs, and to keep it simple let’s break it down; human hair wigs vs. synthetic hair wigs and expensive wigs vs. inexpensive wigs.  A human hair wig is made up of 100% human hair, synthetic hair wigs are made up of a plastic hair like fiber. Human hair wigs will definitely cost you more, especially a high quality human hair wig. Synthetic hair wigs can be found just about anywhere and you can pay almost little to nothing for it. While there are many synthetic hair wigs that can look great for a quick fix or a few wears, don’t be fooled, the pricing definitely reflects the durability. Synthetic hair wigs come “as is”; it cannot be styled by heat, what you see is what you get. Synthetic hair wigs can also have a shiny phony look to it that can be very aging if not worn correctly. Synthetic wigs have to be brushed and manipulated in such a way to even look somewhat natural. Even when choosing different colors, it can look fake because of the plastic shiny texture next to your skin.  I wouldn’t suggest this if you want a close to natural look.

Human hair wigs come in various textures and can be colored, styled, cut and hot curled. Anything you can do to your own hair can be done to a human hair wig. A human hair wig can look virtually undetectable, especially if you blend a small amount of your own hair around the perimeter. Human hair wigs can last many years if taken good care of. Chances are if you spend the time and money on a great human hair wig the more natural it will look and you will definitely save money in the end. It is best to go to a professional to help choose the best cap structure, ventilation and density. After that process is done have the stylist cut and style the wig to your face. The final look you desire should be a ready-to- go hairstyle that lasts for years.

So in closing if you want to buy a great wig, research your options. If you are a pro wig wearer, I strongly suggest a human hair wig as the best way to go. For a quick fix on-the-go, a synthetic hair wig could be what’s best for you. But always remember no one ever wants to hear, “Hey that wig looks great”; the ultimate compliment to receive is “Wow, your hair looks fabulous.”

Batiste Dry Shampoo: Clean and Fresh Hair | No Water Required

batiste Batiste Dry Shampoo: Clean and Fresh Hair | No Water Required

I’ve always wondered what all the rave surrounding dry shampoo was. Different brands are plastered all over magazines and I’ve heard that it’s a necessity among celebrities. Clean hair without showering? Honestly I doubted it’s claim, but I’ve recently tried out Batiste’s Dry Shampoo and was pleasantly surprised. First of all, Batiste offers their dry shampoo’s in different scents and even retails special dry shampoo for blondes and brunettes. The Batiste Hint of Color product claims to compliment your natural hair color to enhance and freshen, while ridding your tresses of oil. My hair tends to get oily very easily, especially after sleeping on it. The morning after I went out one night and didn’t have enough time to shower the next morning, I decided to try Batiste’s Original Dry Shampoo and the Hint of Color in Medium and Brunette. I put the products to the test and here’s what I found:

Batiste Dry Shampoo comes out of the can very strong, so I suggest that you hold the nozzle a fair distance from your head, as per the directions to avoid getting too much product in your hair. Arms distance will be fine, but having a friend spray it in for you will let the product be distributed more evenly. After a couple sprays around my head, I felt like the grease had banished- almost as if I had zapped it away. A couple of days later I tested out the Hint of Color and found the same refreshing results. I have dirty blonde hair and the product really brightened and complimented my hair color.

Based on my experience, Batiste Dry Shampoo’s are the perfect products for the woman on the go. Whether you are late for work, class or a party, Batiste can save you time and unnecessary frustration over your hair.

Windle & Moodie London

WAM London 785x491 Windle & Moodie London
Hair Styling Products For Professional Results from Windle and Moodie:

Hair professionals do wonders even with the most difficult hair. They seem to have all the secrets and their tricks are the best treatment for anyone who wants to pamper himself or get rid of serious problems like split ends, dandruff, too much volume or too little and so on. Well, all these secrets and tricks are actually a mix between knowledge and great professional products. If you don’t know it by now it is time to find out that you can have almost the same treatment for your hair at home simply by doing what professionals do. The results might not be exactly the same because you don’t have their skills but you can have their professional products for care and styling.

Start by learning how to use styling products like a pro. This is essential even if you are an amateur. The main secret is to choose something that is suitable for your hair. Using the wrong product can actually have more damaging effects than not using one at all. If you do not know what to use, ask a professional. He will know what to recommend you and this will definitely help you in your fight against bad hair days. Consider mainly the structure of the hair string but don’t stop here.

Also consider the place you live in. There are areas where humidity is a constant and where the styling products have to be specially adapted to face this downside. Having to move to another region is definitely not a solution so start reading the labels of the professional products. They say clearly whether the product is for humid weather or not. Also, don’t give up activities such as sunbathing or surfing because you are afraid of washed up hair. All you need in this case is some surf spray.

Very few people know that wind can be very damaging. If you want to act like a professional on your hair use professional hair styling products in this case too. Your hair will thank you, the ends will no longer be split and the scalp skin will no longer be too dry.

Did you know that professional products are much more concentrated than the regular ones? Few people know that and they apply large quantities of these products on their hair. The result is definitely not positive as the hair might look too greasy. Moreover, in many situations a small drop of a professional product can actually replace half a can of regular one.

After looking at all these things it is obvious that the professional hair styling products are a great investment that will last for a long period of time. You actually end up saving money this way instead of paying a small sum of money many times every month.

Let the washed up hair be just a bad dream every time you go surfing. The sea can be your friend with the bumble and bumble surf spray.

Peacock ghd IV styler

ghd peacock Peacock ghd IV styler

If you want gorgeous hair you only need one tool in your styling kit; a set of ghd hair straighteners, but despite being an iconic brand there is actually a range of different straighteners to choose from.

If you have normal hair that is mid length to long, then the classic ghd IV styler is perfect for your hair. The styler has been named as Best Styling Tool™ in the Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards 2010 and in the Cosmopolitan 2009 Awards, which makes the styler one of the best hair straighteners around.

The magazine’s readers gave it their kiss of approval™ as the ultimate styling gadget, so you know you will be getting a good bit of kit for your hair. What’s more, the size of the plates are perfect for most hair types, although if you have particularly thick or short hair you may want to look at another styler in the range.

The styler is really versatile because it has a rounded barrel, so you can create a variety of looks with one tool so you can reduce down the number of styling tools you own.

The smooth ceramic plates are perfect for creating sleek straight dos as they don’t snag or pull at the hair. What’s more, the infra-red heat technology means that means that the heat generated from the styler is conducted quicker and last longer than other hair straighteners. Because of this it is really simple to get straight sexy hair, but that is not all that the IV styler can do it can also create gorgeous curls and waves.

Because the styler has a rounder barrel it is really simple to create curls. All you need to do is rotate the styler 180 degrees either away from or towards the head, depending on the type of curl you want, and then pull the straightener through the hair. By varying your speed you can create tight corkscrew curls to looser beach waves all with one styling tool.

It also turns itself if they haven’t been used for 15 minutes, this means there is now less worrying while on the way to work or when out for a night out, because you can’t remember if you have left your straighteners on.
