Emily Blunt dazzled at the 2010 Emmy Awards in a one-shoulder lavender gown with white floral appliqués from Christian Dior’s Resort 2010 collection. She accessorized with a clutch from Lauren Merkin.

Most notable about Blunt’s look was her soft and elegant updo, styled by her long-time stylist, London-born Laini Reeves. Reeves also styled Blunt’s hair for her wedding and is the co-owner of the new Essensuals London Salon on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Reeves was inspired by the finger wave style of the 1920s and wanted to create a look that was fresh yet sophisticated: “We wanted to create a look that was very different from any that Emily had worn before. Once I saw the gown, I knew that a modern look based on the waved looks of the 20’s was the perfect complement for the design.

1. I first shampooed Emily’s hair with Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo to leave it soft, shiny and well conditioned for the intricacies of styling.

2. After mixing a cocktail of Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream and the original Moroccanoil Treatment, I worked the blend from the middle to the ends of the hair to control ends and flyaways and provide natural, looking, soft hold.

3. Next, I made a low side-part on the right and then pincurled the hair in alternating patterns towards the left and behind the right side. Since Emily’s gown had a beautiful beaded accent on the right shoulder, I wanted to place the hair behind the ear to show this off. I made the pincurls in the classic way, pinning three alternate rows of them.

4. I then misted Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray on Emily’s wet hair and let it air-dry for one hour while make-up was applied. I didn’t use a hairdryer this time since I didn’t want the hair to appear blown in any way. I wanted it to look authentic with all the ends nice and neat, so the waves would look softer yet controlled when they were brushed.

5. Once Emily’s hair had air-dried, I released the pincurls and raked my fingers through her hair. I used a panel brush to keep her hair flat to the head so it wouldn’t disturb the root movement of the wave, and gently brushed from part to ends so her hair fell into a lovely wave.

6. Finally, I shaped and styled the flow of the look by framing the left side of Emily’s face with a cascade of waves. To accent the look, I attached a diamond accessory in the hair above the right ear.

7. Since we wanted the style to look a bit shorter and also accent the nape of her neck, I created a pincurled, textured effect there at the nape. I finished the look with a quick mist of argan oil-infused Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to give the hair a beautiful hold without compromising on softness, movement or shine.”

Like so many other twenty-something women, my mind raced when I thought of the possibilities of my more established thirties. Though I’m not knocking on thirty’s door quite yet, it’s time to weed out the bad, establish the good and find a lasting love in life. My search to find the perfect Brazilian bikini wax—one with the best combination of skilled technique and high-quality wax—has ended. It started merely five years ago when I had no idea what I was getting into. The pain, followed by the smooth appearance and clean feeling made it all a bit of a complex beauty formula to be dissected into segmented evaluations of the entire process; to equate whether the pain is worth the final product, take the measure of pain, quantifiable by the number of liquid ibuprofen to precede each wax and the ability to take a shower afterwards without the tingles and open follicle wounds fighting back.

My journey began with a visit to a ‘true brazilian’ in small room with homemade Brazilian wax and ended with a trip to NYC’s Completely Bare hair removal salon in a cozy apartment style spa on the Upper East Side. The spa is tucked between Madison Avenue’s best retail stores, situated for a convenient in-and-out on a holy Sunday morning.

As I entered the spa I was greeted by a chatty young wax connoisseur and pleasantly waited for my turn to experience the inevitable hair removal that I have learned to love, but frequently dreaded.  I was instructed to “undress from the waist down” and Michelle, the esthetician, subtly left the baby wipes on the waxing table for my convenience and her reassurance.  So, I kindly stripped to get ripped and counted down the seconds until Michelle would return to the ‘operation table’.

Most people have a fear of waxing and I must say that it is definitely just as painful as one would expect, typically. But Michelle removed the hair from the sides of my twat and the labia in 5 big swoops. I must say, her technique required no drug infused preparation, and I managed to get through the wax without a scream, yelp, or cry for my father in heaven.

But as the wax went on, I convinced myself I would blackout from the pain by the time the 20 minute strip and rip was over. The thought of having most of the hair-down-there removed at once was more than I could usually bear; Michelle reassured me that I would be fine.  And, not only did I live through the anxiety, the panic and the removal, but I was relieved by the amount of pain—or the lack there of.

Michelle demonstrated the wax’s consistency to me a bit like she was distracting a two year old. It was a purple in-house wax that went on a bit like a gummy liquid plastic on my inner arm and congealed to become a rubbery substance reminiscent of silly putty.  As she demonstrated, I became more relaxed and before I knew it the process was nearly over.

During the last step she instructed me to lift my legs and lean them back, to have my backside waxed and cleaned up a bit. She found hair in places I didn’t know existed.  The official Brazilian wax was finished with a landing strip in the front for show, and the rest was smooth and follicle free.

I must say the New York style was quick, pain-free and now serves as a pleasant point of reference for all waxes in the future.
