Ethnic Beauty | Avocado Oil for the Hair

By Kimberly

avocadoOk girlies, so summer has left your hair parched? Well, I am here to share a little beauty secret with you, especially with those of you that have relaxed hair.  I have been using a drop of Avocado oil on my hair in between washes and have found that it restores the elasticity of my hair (the way to test elasticity is to take a stray hair and pull it at each end, if it pops too fast it’s inelastic, which is not good).  Avocado oil is a great source of daily moisture for the hair.  After applying a couple of drops wait a couple of days and test the elasticity again, you will see a huge difference.  Avocado oil can be picked up at your local health food store or ordered online, BE SURE IT’s REFINED.  Enjoy!

Just Can’t Get Enough: Zosimos Botanicals

By Leah

ZosimosRaspberryNHoneyDryFaceMask

If you’re a greeny, a person obsessed with eating, sleeping and doing all things eco, this company is for you. Zosimos Botanicals is a business that prides itself in pure skincare handcrafted inside a fully wind-powered workshop. As a green enterprise, Zosimos focuses on small quantities that encompass plant-based raw materials, such as, waxes, extracts, herbs, and plant oils. Additionally Zosimos avoids testing on fury critters and stays clear from use of synthetic chemicals and other foreign toxins.

We are in love with the Raspberry N Honey Dry Facial Mask ($20). Linda Stein, Zosimos Botanicals Formulator/Founder tells us the benefit of using a dry mask. “With a hydrated mask, there is a shelf life issue, and with a dry mask, our customer can measure out and hydrate the product whenever they wish, which makes it more versatile and fresh.” Stein also points out that honey serves as a natural humectant as it pulls moisture from the air, so it’s good to use in humid temps or after a hot shower.

The special ingredients that make this mask so novel is quite simple; it includes, honey, pink French clay, Moroccan lava clay and raspberry. Lastly all Zosimos recipes are free from petroleum products, talc, heavy metals, sodium laureth or lauryl sulfide, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance oils or FD&C colorants. Eco peeps: it doesn’t get any better than this.

Unveiling of a not so ordinary snowboard

By Geraldine

July 29, New York City- Last night what felt like a monsoon hit out beloved metropolis, I ventured out to The Standard Hotel located in the Meatpacking District. The reason was a secret unveiling of the K2 snowboard.

The Highline terrace opens its doors to a private viewing of K2 Snowboard known as SlayBlade. Displays of the K2 snowboard were flank on either side of the event space. This is no ordinary snowboard. The SlayBlade is a 2 year collaboration with Penguin Original Clothing Brand. Penguin Original gave full access to K2 designers to use patterns and textures only uses by Penguin Original. This collaboration led to the SlayBlade’s graphic use of patterns, stitching; but yet kept the integrity of the youthful spirit of the brand as well as keeping the style and maturity of the Penguin Original Clothing Brand.

Guests arrived gradually due to the ever downpour of rain. Within an hour and half into the event the place was packed, but yet maneuverable. Mini Delectable assortments of bites were being passed around as well as glasses of champagne and white wine. A fully overstocked bar was in placed for any guests who wanted a variety of libations

Celebrities and fashion stylists were on hand to view the line, from Jorge Ramos celebrity stylist, Nole Marin of VNY Models, Mickey Boardman of Paper Magazine, and Snowboard X-treme boarder Eero Niemela.

Dandy Delights

By David

Gents, why is it that we think we have to break the bank to portray a polished and stylish image?  Well, let’s put that mentality far behind us.  I recently caught up with Matt Fox, owner and shop keeper of Fine and Dandy Shop, an online boutique of men’s accessories.  Matt shares his thoughts on all things dandy, best of all, everything is the shop is under $50.  At prices like that, there are no excuses not to inject a boost of elegance into your summer wardrobe.

DAM: How did Fine and Dandy Shop originate?

MF: For years I’ve wanted to open up a little menswear shop with a similar concept of Fine And Dandy.  But NYC is an expensive city and opening up a store front shop just hasn’t been a reality.  Last April I had the idea to give it a try online and I launched FineAndDandyShop.com this past October to a terrific response. The internet is amazing in that we’re able to reach people all over the world with similar interests.

DAM: What are your most popular items?

MF: Our silver rectangular tie bar is very popular.  It’s very simple but that’s what makes it such a great item.  It’s very Mad Men.  Also, we have a money clip in the shape of a paper clip, which has also done well.  And our socks from Marcoliani have been quite popular.  Marcoliani is a fine Italian sock maker with really great designs and we sell them at a great price point.

DAM: Who do you think is the dandiest male celebrity?

MF: Of course there are the obvious: Fonzworth Bentley (left) and Andre Benjamin (right).  And Chet Cannon (middle) from Real World Brooklyn.  I would even call Justin Timberlake a bit of a dandy.  Will.i.am has been on my radar most recently.  I love that all of these guys rock the dandy style in a modern way.

DAM: Do you have any famous customers?

MF: Not yet.  We were talking to one celebrity about wearing one of our bow ties to the MTV movie awards but the timing didn’t work out.

DAM: Being a dandy seems to by a way of life rather than just a way of dressing.  Would you agree?  Why?

MF: Absolutely.  Being a dandy is about being a gentleman, having an awareness and appreciation of the world that came before him and seamlessly incorporating the past with his modern lifestyle.

DAM: What summer style recommendations do you have for guys who want to be more dandy?

MF: We’re currently all about rolling it up.  It’s been such a rainy summer, it’s fun to roll up everything from your critter pants to denim shorts to linen shirts. Roll ’em up gents!  Our general dandy style advice is to always be the best dressed person in the room (it’s better to be 10% over-dressed than 10% under-dressed) and to always add a little something unusual whether it’s bright-colored socks, or a wild pocket square, or fun novelty cufflinks.
