RIP King of Pop, Michael Jackson

By Tashah

I am sure everyone knows by now that our beloved King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has passed away.  I felt it only fit to contribute a feature to this icon.  Michael not only left a significant mark on the music industry, but also had a strong impact on fashion.  We all know the famous white glove and those elaborate military jackets (which many celebs have been rockin lately).  Here are a few snapshots of signature moments in Michael’s career.  Enjoy and remember to never take life for granted.

Pepper + Pistol Clowning Around

By Kimberly

Combining custom prints with feminine cuts, German born designers Silvia Hillmann and Katrin Wiens have joined forces to tell a tale that illustrates whimsical fancy, fused with drama hidden in a multi-veiled fantasy world. The name of the story is Pepper + Pistol. With the inception of each collection, a new story is spun into the fabrics: the spring 2009 “Babylon” collection is a fun colorful mix of ruffled tops, beachy shift dresses, patterned leggings and long graphic tees, while the fall 2009 “Fashion of Clowning” collection has bedazzled tiger trainer shirt dresses, trapeze printed layered dresses and top, and fun clown-face prints. With every new season, Pepper + Pistol continues to explore the depths of perspective and imagination, while always communicating endearing humor and fanciful mischief.

Eco-RTW Allison Parris

By Kimberly

I had the pleasure of viewing the the Allison Parris collection on Saturday, founded by designer Allison Parris and lawyer/entrepreneur Marissa Kim in the Fall of 2008. The collection is a feminine and sophisticated line that combines luxurious fabrics, contrasting textures and vintage-inspired detail.

The founders have an immense commitment to eco-responsibility, the line uses sustainable, organic and/or re-purposed fabrics without sacrificing style. The line also uses recycled PET satin, made from recycled soda bottles, to line many of its pieces.  The subdued neutrals and well draped fabrics make Allison Parris perfect for a modest woman looking to enhance her wardrobe.  I found the pieces to be well constructed with a feminine edge.  It’s very apparent that Allison is classically trained and very talented.  She attended FIT and has worked with both Catherine Malandrino and Cynthia Rowley.  She has been designing custom gowns for years for a loyal clientele.  We anticipate seeing more of her collections for years to come and look forward to the innovative creations.

Kazuyo Nakano

By Kimberly

With a strong back ground in design, Kazuyo Nakano launched her first handbag collection in 1997, which has grown into an international brand ever since.

Nakano’s father owned a handbag business in Kyoto, Japan, and introduced her to the business and design aspect of it at an early age. She knew right away that she wanted to focus on design and attended the prestigious Lei Design School in Kyoto.

Post graduation, Nakano moved to Italy where she was named the Assistant Designer to Piero Guidi. Armed with the professional knowledge and experience she gained in Italy, she moved to New York where she designed for labels like Carlos Falchi, Robert Lee Morris, and Donna Karan.

Today, Nakano designs for women that have “complex lifestyles defined by more than one ambition and more than one essential quality.” All the bags are handmade with a sense of fantasy, creativity, and designed with old and new aesthetics in mind.

For spring 2009, Kazuyo Nakano offers wallets that transform to clutches and clutches that transform into totes and messenger bags, making these bags worthy investment pieces. The uniquely versatile styles combined with the alluring colors, leather treatments, lush tassels, and folded details make Kazuyo Nakano stand out from your average handbag.
